2008 Peak Season Campaign: Media Relations Activity

Media Blitzes

The Office of Tourism strongly believes in a proactive approach to working with the media, as well as the importance of building relationships with key journalists and media outlets in order to gain publicity for the state. For those reasons, the Media & Public Relations team made their way to the cities of Minneapolis, New York City and Washington, D.C. to speak with various media professionals about the travel story opportunities across South Dakota.

The team met with a large number of media consisting of freelance writers, large publications and everything in between. Each meeting allowed the team to gain insight into the interests of the writer and his or her readers, offer themselves as a resource for future stories and take the first step in building a successful relationship.

Minneapolis:

  • Two freelance writers
  • The Star Tribune (Outdoor Editor, Travel Editor, Travel Writer)
  • Midwest Outdoors magazine
  • Minneapolis/St. Paul magazine
  • Conducted media blitz in conjunction with special Great Neighbor promotion that involved a street team.

New York City:

  • Budget Travel magazine
  • IgoUgo.com
  • Travel + Leisure GOLF magazine
  • Country Living magazine

Washington, D.C.:

  • USA Today
  • National Geographic magazine
  • Curator for the National Museum of the American Indian

See South Dakota Week

While those of us in the visitor industry think every week should be Tourism Week, we are given one week a year in which the importance of tourism is recognized nationally. The 2008 See America Week took place May 10-18. The Office of Tourism worked with CVBs statewide to spread the message of tourism’s benefits. Marketing promotions including campaigns focused in each participating community, media blitzes and interviews as well as hospitality service training are the backbone of this year’s campaign. CVBs participating in the media campaign include Yankton, Mitchell, Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Aberdeen and Pierre.
