2008 Shoulder Season Campaign: Media Relations Activity

Media Relations Activity

The Office of Tourism believes in a proactive approach to working with the media, as well as the importance of building a strong and trusted relationship with the public. The Media & Public Relations team works on both sides, promoting South Dakota to both in-state and out-of-state journalists, then making sure those journalists have the information they need to tell the story of South Dakota to our potential visitors.

Buffalo Roundup

Each year, the Media & Public Relations team invites journalists from around the country to visit South Dakota and take in the fascinating Buffalo Roundup. Prior to the Roundup, the team hosts these journalists on a tour of western South Dakota. This yearís tour included an authentic Old West cultural experience at a working ranch, a taste of South Dakota made wine, and a tour through some of the stateís most breathtaking countryside.

The Media & Public Relations team also worked closely with Custer State Park to provide an informational media tent, and two special tours of the bison herd for journalists.

The shoulder season continues to be a popular time for visitors to come to South Dakota, and part of that is due to the world-class pheasant hunting found here. In 2008, the Office of Tourism celebrated the South Dakota Pheasantennial: 100 Years of Tradition, which marked the 100th year of the successful introduction of the Chinese Ring-necked Pheasant into South Dakota.

The Media & PR team worked to tell the Pheasantennial story to local, regional and national media, while fielding questions from interested residents and out-of-state hunters.

During the 2008 shoulder season, the Office of Tourismís hunting website,, was re-designed to reflect the same brand as the rest of our marketing.

Multi-Media Press Releases

As journalists continue turning to social media and are looking for more and more convenience in their reporting, the traditional press release is becoming less popular. Therefore, the Media & Public Relations team worked with Lawrence & Schiller to develop a multi-media press release format that includes video, photos, text, fast facts and links all in one document. With this new format, journalists have all of the information and resources they need, right at their fingertips. In 2008, the team was able to create eight of these releases.
