South Dakota Corps of Rediscovery

South Dakota Corps of Rediscovery

On April 9, 1996, the South Dakota Office of Tourism coordinated a meeting for people interested in planning for the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial. The idea for this gathering developed out of a Lewis and Clark Symposium held in September of 1994.

The group developed into the state’s grass roots planning committee for South Dakota’s role in the Bicentennial. On July 19, 2000, Governor William J. Janklow made the group official and named it the South Dakota Corps of Rediscovery. A joint resolution was passed by the 2001 South Dakota State Legislature concurring with the governor in deeming this the official planning committee.

Members of the South Dakota Corps of Rediscovery were integral in planning South Dakota’s Bicentennial activities during 2004-2006.
