Governor's Conference on Tourism

Congratulations to the newest annual tourism award winners: Bill Walsh – Ben Black Elk Award; Midwest Living – A. H. Pankow Award; and Cedar Shore Resort – George S. Mickelson Great Service Award.

Compiled evaluation comments for review by staff. Comments will be considered for the 2007 Conference on January 17-18 in Pierre. Compared full registration numbers for the last four conferences: 520 in 2006, 490 in 2005, 499 in 2004, and 500 in 2003.

Introduced two new poster designs at the Tourism Conference – 30”x20” size includes a white border frame and South Dakota logo in gray – one of Mount Rushmore and the other of the falls at Falls Park. Posters are on sale at the Tourism Office for $5 each plus local sales tax and $1 shipping. To order, call Eileen at 773-3301.

Tourism is thankful for the wonderful conference sponsors. The conference is funded through registrations and sponsorships; and without sponsorships, there would be no conference.

RURAL TOURISM DEVELOPMENT

Continued discussions with individuals and agencies regarding an agritourism conference in the fall.

Attended meeting with representatives in Highmore to discuss co-op programs, group tour participation, what to promote to visitors, and distributed Tourism Assistance Directory as a follow up to rural assessment meeting.

PUBLIC RELATIONS

Contacted Discoveries America, a high-definition television show airing on the Outdoor Channel and which focuses on travel stories. Crew will be in South Dakota in May to film locations.

Provided information to Small Market Meetings, a publication regarding locations for meetings in parks. Recommended a number of state parks. Fort Sisseton was chosen and will be the cover story in an upcoming issue.

Assisted organizers regarding a media day at Fort Sisseton State Park the end of March.

Met with executive directors of the state’s CVBs to discuss promotions for National Tourism Week.

Provided outdoor or travel media interviews/information to Fishing the Midwest; Tony Dean Outdoors; Midwest Living; Rapid City Journal; Argus Leader; Orion Multimedia; Dakota Radio Group; Omaha World Herald, Sioux City Journal, Home and Away magazine, South Dakota Rural Electrical Association for their newsletter, and various freelancers.

GROUP TOUR

Began process for biennial update of the Group Tour Planning Guide – updated forms, set deadlines, and contacted the Department of Health for their listings. Expected completion date is December 2006.

Attended a meeting hosted by the Pierre Chamber of Commerce regarding a request by Cabela’s for assistance in conducting their 2006 fishing tournament. Contacted officials in towns that had previously hosted this tournament and shared at the meeting.

Conducted conference with officials from Rapid City, Deadwood, Sioux Falls, Black Hills, Badlands & Lakes regarding possible spring trade blitz to Chicago and Minneapolis that would include travel agencies and tour operators.

Compiled minutes from 2Nation Tours meeting held during the National Tour Association (NTA) convention and forwarded them to contacts in North Dakota, Minnesota, and Manitoba. Group will meet again in February during American Bus Association (ABA) marketplace. Prepared lead book with scheduled appointments and their company information. Sent appointment schedule and the list of the 36 South Dakota suppliers to those attending. Prepared binder on South Dakota that will be placed in the Education Center at marketplace.

Completed follow-up to 94 NTA Convention leads and mailed those group tour names to 77 South Dakota NTA/ABA members so they can follow-up with them for the 2006 and 2007 seasons.

Attended NAJ Summit in Los Angeles to promote South Dakota and met with 21 tour wholesalers.

Contacted African American Conference to obtain forms to register for conference.

Fulfilled requests for information to Corliss Krusemark, Nebraska; Tri State Charters, North Carolina; writer Herve Duxin, France; Rainer Strassberger, Germany; Aventuria for France & Australia, and to Heinz Broadcast TV Station, Germany.

Worked with Rocky Mountain International (RMI) office on media fam for My Planet, Denmark, June 25-July 16, in Wyoming, North Dakota, Montana, and South Dakota. The South Dakota portion is July 1-5 with visits to Black Hills, Badlands, and central South Dakota.

Forwarded requests for ranch brochures to South Dakota ranches so they can follow-up with Italian RMI office request. Contacted RMI Italy regarding Luca Centoni DVD, and sent a copy to the 18 South Dakota suppliers who hosted him. Contacted Rapid City airport regarding landing of 747 jumbo jet for Italian tour of 360 people in October 2006.

Sent South Dakota photo CDs to Osamu for presentation to Japanese tour operators.

OUTDOORS

Finalized plans to attend the SHOT Show in Las Vegas in February. Confirmed media appointments with several publications.

Began planning a meeting for the Great Lakes Birding Trail Guidebook, which will be similar to the other regions’ guidebooks. Contacted Great Lakes Association regarding book publishing.

Finalized plans to host media on an ice fishing hosting in the Glacial Lakes. Will base out of Webster. Media includes Fishing the Wildside, Sioux City Journal, Omaha World Herald, Fargo Forum, Argus Leader, Dakota Country, South Dakota Outdoors, and freelancers.

FILM OFFICE

Attended the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, and hosted a joint reception with Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho film offices.  The group is collectively known as “Film the West.”  Approximately 200 filmmakers, directors, producers and actors attended the event.

Created a half-page black and white ad for NY 411, following the design of the new FilmSD.com website.

Will use a 4x4-inch magnet media teaser to promote the new website design. Designed web buttons to be used on Kemps website, Moviemaker website, Production Update, and AFCI.org websites to take people to FilmSD.com.

Created an oversized postcard to mail to 4,500 members of the film industry to announce the elements of FilmSD.

Fulfilled requests for materials from AAA/CAA offices and independent travel agencies in Indiana, Nebraska, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and South Dakota.

INFORMATION CENTERS

Requested that Bureau of Personnel post application for Information Center travel counselors. Sent press release to announce the openings. Have received 42 applications, 29 of which are former counselors. Drafted tentative fam itinerary. Research technology and partnerships in other states in relation to use of centers.

HOSPITALITY

Annual George S. Mickelson Great Service Award was given to Cedar Shore Resort, Oacoma.

Began researching hospitality programs in other states.

TRAVEL MARKET ADVERTISING

Finalized details to attend the annual Las Vegas Sportsmen’s Boat, RV and Travel Show in February. Will set up a calendar for other visitor industry partners to reserve Tourism’s travel show booth.

Finalizing ads for Giant Step partners for first round placements in March issue of Midwest Living (circ: 925,000) in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Wisconsin, and South Dakota. Ads will run 16 times in eight magazines over a five-month period – April through June issues for circulation of nearly 8 million subscribers. Other elements of the Peak Season campaign include both network and cable TV, newspapers, media blitz, and electronic. A new component of peak season is an ethanol coupon, mailed upon request to out-of-state visitors to use when they visit South Dakota. This is in partnership with the American Coalition for Ethanol.

The Great Getaways peak season newspaper insert remains unchanged in format, and partners have to be from the Great Lakes, Glacial Lakes & Prairies, or Southeast South Dakota Tourism regions. The first insertions are in April and the buy covers newspapers in Regina, Saskatchewan; Winnipeg, Manitoba; 11 in Minnesota; 10 in Iowa; two in Nebraska; two in North Dakota, and Sioux Falls. Circulation is estimated at 1.5 million households.

Sent the January issue of Travelsmart to 145,221 subscribers.

PUBLICATIONS

Sent final Tourism pages to Black Hills, Badlands & Lakes Association to be compiled with pages from the other four partners into the 2006-2007 South Dakota Vacation Guide. Delivery is expected in late February.

Scheduled conference call with major motorcycle dealers to discuss scenic routes for a motorcycle brochure.

WORLD WIDE WEB

On TravelSD.com: updated Visitor Services Directory to show 4,954 entries; and 71 packages, 16 coupons, and one “at par” package are listed for 27 cities in 26 categories. There are 585 listings for the 2006 statewide calendar of events on TravelSD.com.

Re-launched SDVisit.com at Tourism Conference. Added conference information on research, award winners, and Tourism Board officers to SDVisit. Created an online registration form for the Comin’ to Your City” Tour and posted on SDVisit.

Mailed Tourism fyi to visitor industry. Highlights included elements of the winter campaign, shoulder season campaign report, important dates, launch of FilmSD, 2006 Governor’s Conference on Tourism, and Deadwood was a featured partner.

RESEARCH

Added link to results for South Dakota’s Travel Monitoring System to SDVisit.

Worked with consultant to correct the Economic Impact Study as incorrect sales tax data for one county was given to consultant. Study has been updated and annual report is being reprinted. Both will be reposted to SDVisit.

TOURISM OFFICE FUNDING

Deadwood gaming revenue deposited for December was up 16.4 percent at $181,990, as compared to $156,381 for December 2004. The tourism tax deposited for December was up 10.1 percent at $272,393, as compared to $246,133 for December 2004. The deposits in FY06 for gaming and the tourism tax are $5,560,663, as compared to $5,208,387 for FY05. This is an overall increase in revenue of 6.8 percent when comparing the same time period.
