2007 GOVERNOR'S CONFERENCE ON TOURISM

Narrowed list of speaker options per possible topics for the conference. Finalized sponsorship mailer and will mail in September. Will again offer sessions for web consultations and print ad reviews.

Deadline to submit nominations for the 2007 A.H. Pankow and Ben Black Elk Awards is August 30. The forms can be found online. Log onto SDVisit.com and negotiate the following clicks: Reference Tools, Annual Conference, Tourism Awards, and finally Nomination Forms to find a format to e-mail the nominations or forms to download, complete, and send to Tourism.

PUBLIC RELATIONS

Cross-checked labels from databases and removed duplicates for Winter 2006-2007 Great News mailing to 8,500 domestic and international journalists, tour operators, and travel agents. Researched and drafted copy for Fall ’07 Great News Newsletter, which will be mailed next spring.

Fulfilled media information requests from People magazine, Good Morning America, Rachael Rae Show, Ok magazine, Midwest RV Traveler, and Travel Host magazine.

TRADE SALES GROUP TOUR/INTERNATIONAL

Completed design of the 2006 group tour co-op ad, which has 20 partners. Will place ad in Destinations, Bank Travel Management, Courier, and Packaged Travel Insider magazines.

Continued working with Sioux Falls and representatives of the Association of Great Lakes Outdoors Writers (AGLOW) on conference details, September 11 – 14, to be held at the Sheraton Hotel in Sioux Falls. John Cooper, Cabinet Secretary of the Department of Game, Fish & Parks, is the featured speaker at dinner on September 11. Tourism is sponsoring this dinner. Approximately 140 entities – CVBs, Chambers of Commerce, community betterment associations, regional tourism boards – were contacted to offer booth space for displays on the final day of the conference.

Sent requested information as follow-up to leads received from the Badlands RC&D from the South Dakota - Nebraska American Indian Tourism Conference held in Martin on March 25: Gary Fisher and Connie Shell, Crawford, Nebraska; James Ambrose, Rosebud; Theresa Benda, White River; and Randy Two Crow, Kyle.

Fulfilled requests for materials to AAA/CAA offices in California, Colorado, Iowa, Massachusetts, Maryland, Minnesota, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Washington DC, Wisconsin, and Canada.

Assembled and sent the June AAA e-newsletter to 90 recipients. Obtained contact information from AAA offices throughout the country in order to expand the reach of Tourism’s AAA e-newsletter and to change its name to reflect inclusion of travel agents in the database.

Sent invitations to 80 National Tour Association (NTA) and American Bus Association ABA) members for a pre-convention caucus meeting in Pierre, August 29, at the Legion Cabin. Proofed and mailed postcards to 650 NTA tour operators with the list of South Dakota suppliers who plan to attend the NTA conference in November. Supplier list will enhance awareness of South Dakota suppliers for appointment requests for the conference. Contacted South Dakota NTA members who plan to attend the conference to set up a meeting during NTA.

Drafted letter of invitation, itinerary, and RSVP form for a fam tour to be held in October for AAA contacts and travel agents who were met during trade blitzes in Chicago and Minneapolis this spring.

Sent requested information to Bonnie Alderson, Jerry Vittatoe, Tennessee; Allied Tour & Travel, Nebraska; Bob Neff Tours, Inc., Pennsylvania; Dream Makers Travel, Pasadena Travellarians, Garret South, California; Dale McCorkle, Discovery Tours, Texas; Elvine Parker, Florida; Leah Cosby, Massachusetts; Security National Bank, Wisconsin; Shebby Lee Tours, South Dakota; Keysar Tour, Georgia, Africa; and MyPlanet, Denmark.

Met Korean delegation traveling with Representative Deb Peters and presented information on international and trade sales promotions.

Worked with Rapid City CVB and Osamu on JATA co-op booth to showcase South Dakota in Japan. Finalized plans to attend the Los Angeles Sales Mission in August, organized by Osamu Hoshino. Audience will be tourism officials and Japanese group tour operators.

Provided itinerary helps and suggestions for German tour of 25 people coming to South Dakota with Lisa Mulvaney, Fargo, North Dakota.

Completed follow up with personalized letters and information packets to 32 tour operators and journalists who met with the Rocky Mountain International (RMI) delegation during TIA Pow Wow and 67 tour operators and journalists from the ITB Show.

Hosted journalist/photographer team, Timm Vladimir and Katrine Engberg, My Planet, Denmark. They were on a year-long, world-wide press trip and included the RMI Region. Timm Vladimir and Katrine Engberg were in the RMI region from June 25-July 16, with the South Dakota portion July 4-8 to Black Hills, Badlands and central South Dakota. (Result of 2005 Scandinavian Mission.)

Assisted Qun Chen, National Geographic Traveller, China, (Asian distribution) with itinerary suggestions and lodging for press trip to the Black Hills in July.

Compiled press his and circulation data for FY06 international journalists’ hostings: Buffalo Roundup press was estimated at $996,968.00, and circulation of the publications was 7,762,602. Total international press, including Buffalo Roundup, was $3,696,173.68, with circulation at 31,121,938. Sent letters and copies of articles to the 90 South Dakota suppliers mentioned in the articles.

Developed a timeline for Outdoor News and began researching and drafting copy.

FILM OFFICE

Traveled to film sets for BBC’s, “Custer’s Plan” near Wasta and to Carthage for filming of Sean Penn’s movie, “Into the Wild.” Contacted and worked with Sioux Falls transit and city officials about getting transit bus for “Into the Wild.” Responded to calls regarding casting and filming of “The Stone Child.”

Followed up on Dakota or Bust Film Festival for 2006 results and plans for 2007.

Fulfilled e-mail and phone inquiries from FilmSD.com on crew/service listings, casting calls, location photos, film incentives etc.

Responded to inquiry from KT Meyers who was seeking buildings built in the 1840s/50s.

Fulfilled requests for filming information from Into the Wild, National Geographic, ABC Good Morning America, Biker Buildoff, Great Plains Productions, Marvin Entertainment, Rachael Rae Show, History Channel, Anonymous Content, Media Place, Working Hands Productions, Passenger Productions of Sioux Falls, and BBC Wild West and Roaring Fire Films of the United Kingdom.

INFORMATION CENTERS

Calculated car count for June, which showed a decrease of 4.4% over June 2005; for Canadian visitors, car count was down 5.2%; and car count for international visitors was down 21.2%. For June, 224 motorcoaches/buses stopped at the Information Centers, and 18 were international.

Use of Travel tapes and CDs at the Information Centers was down 38.2% over June 2005.

Received 281 comment cards in June.

HOSPITALITY

Reviewed hospitality nominations and sent notifications to recipients. For 2006, 95 individuals/businesses have received recognition for hospitality with the Governor’s Certificate; 15 have received the foil star for a second recognition; and five have received a gold lapel pin for a third recognition.

Prepared timeline for the program, with plans to mail applications for the 2006 George S. Mickelson Great Service Award and the Great Service STAR designations.

Reviewed hospitality programs of other states.

TRAVEL MARKET ADVERTISING

Finalized shoulder season ad campaign and routed to L&S for placement, which included magazine ads with following themes: Arthur Frommer’s Budget Travel – Giant Step ad (River image), Midwest Living – Giant Step ad (Rushmore 1 image), T + L Family magazine– Giant Step ad (Buffalo image), Travel 50 & Beyond – Giant Step ad (Rushmore 2 image), Field & Stream – hunting ad, Outdoor Life – hunting ad, Ducks Unlimited Journal – hunting ad, and Pheasants Forever – hunting ad; and newspaper ad in St. Paul Go Guide.

Designed and coordinated the printing of 714,750 copies of the shoulder season Great Getaways insert, which will be placed in several newspapers in Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, and South Dakota.

Conducted random drawing for winner of the Rediscover Your Weekend Giveaway sponsored by Glacial Lakes & Prairies Tourism Association (GL&P). The list was de-duped and there were 216 validated entries, in accordance with the Official Rules that were written by GL&P and Tourism. Winner has been contacted.

Assembled and routed the July issues of Travelsmart. The “generic” issue was received by 147,696 list members and the “outdoors niche” issue was received by 13,183 list members for a total of 160,879.

CORRECTED June Travelsmart data: the “generic” issue was received by 137,173 list members and the “outdoors niche” issue was received by 12,763 list members for a total received to 149,936.

PUBLICATIONS

Updated information and redesigned the Great Parks, Monuments and Memorials brochure. Will determine print amounts from bid proposals/costs per language translation.

WORLD WIDE WEB

On TravelSD.com: updated Visitor Services Directory to show 4,990 entries; and 142 vacation packages/travel specials are listed for 31 cities in 25 categories. There are 619 listings for the 2006 statewide calendar of events. Mailed forms for the 2007 events listings.

Updated information on HuntinSD.com and FishinSD.com to correspond with changes in the new Fishing & Hunting Guide.

RESEARCH

Attended focus groups in Sioux Falls, Denver, and Cheyenne, which were organized and conducted by staff from L&S. Summary is being drafted by L&S.

Have input data from 400 Intercept Surveys. Will continue to record responses from over 1,500 that have been returned.

LOGO USAGE

Fulfilled requests for logo for use on American Cancer Society’s 50 state tents in Washington DC; Megan Bushfield for Steve Rounds; Jon Sailer at BPro for Public Utilities Commission booth banner; and Mark Undeberg for use on a rug layout for Dave Nelson in Sioux Falls. Sent Great Service Star logo to Jean Lacher at Ramkota Properties for a Rapid City based ad.

STATE FAIR

Will again decorate the booth to promote fall events – “Fall Adventures/Activities in SD.” Chose photos of events and worked with event organizers to offer giveaways in each of the four tourism regions.

Independence Day Celebration

Worked with Impact Video to run cable and set-up for the big screens. Contracted with Linn Productions for a second camera for the monitors. Shot video of the fireworks and broadcast it for the satellite feed. Selected video clips from the tracking reports. Made dubs of the fireworks for the Mount Rushmore Memorial National Memorial Society.

Posted new fireworks photos to both MediaSD.com and TravelSD.com.

Governor's Buffalo Roundup

Ordered invitations, and will mail in August. Mocked up designs for license plates, water bottles labels, and truck decals.

Contacted representatives or owners of the properties for six tours being offered for Roundup guests and discussed elements of each tour. Will finalize details in September.

Started working on plans for the Roundup satellite feed: reserve satellite truck and satellite space with Relay House and develop a media plan for the satellite feed.

Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo, July 13-16, Mitchell: Produced and placed display ads in following newspapers: The Marshall Independent, The Daily Globe, and The Pipestone County Star, Minnesota; and Sioux City Journal. Developed and ran 30 second radio ads in Marshall (KKCK), Worthington (KWOA), Pipestone (KISD), Minnesota; and in Sioux City (KGLI), Iowa. Ran 30 second Spanish radio ads in Worthington (KITN). Produced and distributed buttons for Information Center travel counselors. Sent evaluation forms to committee.

GREAT EVENTS 2007

Updated the Great Events Campaign application and information on SDVisit.com to reflect the FY2007 campaign. Drafted letter to events listed on TravelSD to encourage organizers to apply to be part of the 2007 campaign. Sent letters to Chambers of Commerce, CVBs, and Tribal Offices regarding the 2007 campaign and to encourage events in their community to apply. Responded to questions from interested applicants.

TOURISM OFFICE FUNDING

Deadwood gaming revenue deposited for June was up 7.4 percent at $242,263, as compared to $225,588 for June 2005. The tourism tax deposited for June was up 8.5 percent at $303,960, as compared to $280,172 for June 2005. The deposits for FY07 for gaming and the tourism tax are $546,223, as compared to $505,760 for FY06. This is an overall increase in revenue of 8.0 percent when comparing the same time period in FY06.
