PIERRE, S.D. – Three South Dakota chefs have been announced as semifinalist nominees for the 2025 James Beard Awards.
The James Beard Awards are considered one of the highest honors in the culinary industry.
Joseph Raney* from Skogen Kitchen in Custer is a semifinalist in the “Best Chef: Midwest” category. He is no stranger to the James Beard Awards, having been nominated in the same category in 2023.
Chris Hanmer from CH Patisserie is a semifinalist in the nationwide category of “Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker.” CH Patisserie is in downtown Sioux Falls.
Additionally, Marcela Salas from BibiSol, also in downtown Sioux Falls, has been named a semifinalist in the nationwide “Emerging Chef” category.
“We are thrilled to celebrate these outstanding South Dakota chefs and restaurants. Anybody who has been to their restaurants can easily understand why they are finalists in their respective categories,” said James Hagen, Secretary of the South Dakota Department of Tourism. “Visitors and locals alike rave about these outstanding chefs. They are putting South Dakota on the map as a culinary destination.”
Finalists will be announced on April 2, and winners will be awarded at the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards Ceremony on June 16 in Chicago, Illinois.
The South Dakota Department of Tourism is comprised of Travel South Dakota and the South Dakota Arts Council. The Department is led by Secretary James D. Hagen.
