TRAVEL SOUTH DAKOTA LAUNCHES UNEXPECTED STAYS PASSPORT

10/7/2026

PIERRE, S.D. – Sometimes, the place you stay becomes part of the adventure.

Travel South Dakota is inviting South Dakotans and visitors to make their overnight stay part of the story with the new Unexpected Stays Passport, a free digital passport featuring unique and memorable places to stay across the state.

From cozy cabins and A-frames to historic hotels and full-service resorts, the passport features more than 30 lodging experiences that offer something a little different. Featured locations include Abbey of the Hills in Marvin, Bavarian Inn in Custer, Lewis & Clark Resort in Yankton and Shortgrass Resort in Spearfish.

“In South Dakota, where you stay can be just as memorable as where you go,” said Secretary of Tourism James Hagen. “This passport gives people another reason to get out there, explore someplace new and make a few memories along the way.”

The passport is free and easy to use. Travelers can sign up on their mobile device, explore participating locations and check in as they visit and stay at each destination. Every check-in earns points that can be redeemed for prizes through Travel South Dakota’s passport program.

No app download is required. Once signed up, travelers can save the passport directly to their smartphone’s home screen for quick and easy access throughout their travels.

The Unexpected Stays Passport is part of Travel South Dakota’s collection of free digital passports, which encourage exploration across the state while connecting travelers with South Dakota’s communities, attractions, businesses and experiences.
