2023 Ruth Ziolkowski Outstanding Hospitality & Customer Service Awards

The Ruth Ziolkowski Outstanding Hospitality & Customer Service Award recognizes members of the tourism industry who, like Ruth Ziolkowski, have demonstrated remarkable service to every visitor they encounter, and whose work demonstrates an outstanding spirit of hospitality, warmth and genuine kindness.

An individual from each of the four tourism regions is honored annually. The recipients are selected by each region's board of directors.

“These are the kind of people who embody the essence of customer service in South Dakota,” said James Hagen, Secretary of the Department of Tourism. “Their profound dedication, resilience, and talent are what put our state’s hospitality above all other competitors.

Kelly Larson of the Dakota Indian Foundation/Dakota Plains Gallery & Gifts in Chamberlain has played a major part in helping create opportunities for local artists and visitors in her town. She started in the mail room of the Dakota Indian Foundation, but quickly became the go-to person to manage its gallery and gift shop featuring the work of local artists.

Kelly not only manages but also curates the exhibits and helps with sales. She personally meets every artist and learns the story behind the work so she can share it with potential buyers. Kelly says she loves these conversations and hopes every person she meets leaves the gallery with a sense of belonging and a big smile!

At check-in, Zane quickly engages visitors and finds out where they are from and what brought them to South Dakota. He also provides them with suggestions of places to visit and where to dine. Once guests return to the hotel, Zane greets them by name and asks if they enjoyed his suggestions.

He is mentioned by name in guest surveys and reviews for his outstanding customer service. Based on the number of comments he receives, our winner is positively impacting visitors and their experience in Sioux Falls.

Dianne Larson from the Ingalls Homestead in De Smet understands, just as Ruth did that visitors are giving us the gift of their time. They have decided to visit and sometimes have waited years to come to South Dakota. That's why Dianne takes the time to engage with visitors, listen to their stories, and answer their questions. She takes pictures for them and even keeps extra silverware for picnickers who forgot to bring it along.

Dianne is described as genuine and kind to all, giving hugs, laughing and even crying with visitors. She deals with unexpected problems with a sense of humor and grace by helping jump dead car batteries, getting in touch with service stations, and even lending troubled travelers her own vehicle.
